Welcome to the Save the Salamander exercise. Review the steps below to initialize your environment and prepare your team for negotiation.

Scenario Overview

World of Water Inc. (WOW) intends to build a data center utilizing an innovative cooling technology that draws natural water and returns it to the source. However, allegations of questionable gratuities to government administrators have surfaced. Furthermore, environmentalists protest that the proposed discharge may harm a threatened species living downstream.

Deploy Your Team

Before diving into the scenario, a facilitator or team leader must initialize a private simulation instance to securely register a new command group and generate encrypted digital keys for your participants.

Assemble Participants

This exercise is designed to be played with up to 5 participants representing the major stakeholders.

Missing players?Don't worry. The system can automatically simulate any unoccupied stakeholder roles, allowing you to run the exercise even if you are playing solo.

Assign Roles & Understand Metrics

Each participant will assume one of the following personas by inputting the associated password (in yellow) from the Team Deployment page into the Stakeholder Portal. Click on a role to view its core values and target success metrics.

How to Use the AI Assistant

During the exercise, you will have access to an AI-driven assistant that functions as a knowledge management system to help you research details related to the exercise. This system can access only the information that your character would be able to access during the scenario. For example, if you play as the CEO, you cannot prompt the system to get information that only the government official such as their risks for continuing with the project as planned.

Note: This system is intentionally imperfect. It is designed to teach you how to write effective prompts for AI systems. To get access to your desired information and response by the system, be certain to practice good prompt engineering principles:

  • Include relevant context: Provide the system with necessary background information about your specific role, goals, and the current situation.
  • Clearly state desired output: Be highly specific about exactly what question you want answered or what format you need the information in.
  • Use pertinent keywords: Include specific terminology related to the project, your target metrics, or the other stakeholders to trigger the correct knowledge retrieval.
  • Iterate and refine: If the initial response fails to return relevant information, adjust your prompt and try again.

How to Play

Your ultimate goal is to arrive at a final strategic choice regarding the WOW data center that maximizes the specific payoff (metric) for the stakeholder you are playing.

  • Query the AI Assistant for information regarding the impact each choice you make and each choice that other stakeholders make will have on your payoff.
  • Negotiate aggressively or collaboratively with your peers. Each stakeholder's payoff is dependent on the choices of the other stakeholders. The game is designed to promote active discussion and negotiations between all players.
  • Compromise where necessary, but play in the best interest of your own stakeholder.
  • Note that in the current version, simulated stakeholders will not negotiate. They will choose the action that maximizes their own payoff at the time the "Simulate Actions" button is pressed for the respective stakeholder.

Track & Resolve

Once negotiations conclude, the team manager must finalize the results to view the impact of your collective choices. The Team Tracker allows all players to view the decisions of their fellow team members, communicate (if doing the exercise virtually), and see the final payoffs.
